In an increasingly interconnected world where crises can have a global impact, informed and timely decision-making is crucial. The Copernicus Service in Support of EU External Action and Security (SESA) strengthens the ability of the EU and its Member States to prevent, prepare for and respond to crises. SESA uses Earth observation to provide security-relevant geospatial information for the benefit of institutional actors. With services such as geospatial analysis, situational awareness maps and planning support, SESA contributes to managing trans-regional threats and promoting stability.
We are part of the European SESA consortium and support with the following services:
The aim is to procure services in the EU border area to support the Reference Mapping Service for FRONTEX, based on international mapping standards. The Reference Mapping Service of the European Union Satellite Center serves to provide a geographical overview and representation of areas in third countries. This includes hydrography, topography, land cover/use, infrastructure and population-related activities. The resulting reference maps support the monitoring of border areas and improve decision-making and the responsiveness of competent authorities in the control and surveillance of European maritime borders.
As the leading company in a European consortium, IABG is responsible for project management and implementation. This includes the processing of satellite imagery, including orthorectification and mosaic creation. The reference maps and information on land use and land cover are obtained from optical satellite images, using both manual and semi-automatic image interpretation techniques
In the past century, serious crimes were committed during various conflicts, often in violation of international law. International institutions such as the International Criminal Court (ICC) are responsible for investigating and prosecuting such crimes and bringing those responsible to justice. These include genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and other forms of aggression. Reliable evidence is crucial for successful prosecution. Information from Earth observation (EO) can provide valuable data in such cases and effectively support the presentation of evidence
As part of the EVIDERI project, the European Space Agency (ESA) is supporting the use of Earth observation to gather evidence in such cases.
