When it comes to technical systems, we generally distinguish between two aspects of safety: "Security" refers to protection against third-party interference that attempts to manipulate the system, while "Safety" concerns the external impact of the technical system on its environment and people.
Autonomous systems still pose a significant challenge for the automotive industry today. They are particularly vulnerable because all their functions are controlled, making them susceptible to a wide range of potential attack vectors. In addition to the functional requirements, which are largely implemented, the safety of these systems must be ensured under all conceivable conditions to achieve broad societal acceptance.
Functionality means that a system has algorithms that work, such as traffic sign recognition. However, safety means that every sign is correctly recognized at all times, even under difficult conditions like partial obstruction or poor visibility. Extensive verification and validation measures are required to prove this safety, including simulations, test drives on proving grounds, and real-world trials.
New Industry Standards Ensure the Safety of Autonomous Systems
Another key aspect is providing safety evidence for autonomous systems. These proofs ensure the systematic capture and evaluation of the reliability of machine learning processes.
The ISO/PAS 8800 specification contributes to reducing the risks of artificial intelligence in safety-critical systems for road vehicles. We played a significant role in the uncertainty quantification of AI systems. The results have been incorporated into the DIN SPEC 92005 standard, which was published in January 2024 and will serve as a basis for the development of a new international standard. These standards provide the foundation for the reliable use of autonomous systems worldwide. By creating such guidelines, it is ensured that autonomous vehicles meet the same high safety standards everywhere. This is a crucial step in building trust in autonomous vehicles and promoting their widespread acceptance.
